This was a facinating article for me. When I was only about 12 yrs. old I read the book
"Old Bones" about the race horse Exterminator. As soon as I started reading this article I recognized the name of the owner of Merrick, Cal Milam. He must have been a wonderful owner to his horses and obviously loved them much.

I don't know if it was because of my love of this book that added "Thoroughbred" to my dream of one day owning a horse, but at the age of 12 it was only a dream. Finally at the age of 21 my dream came true. I bought my first horse, a 4-yr. old Thoroughbred filly named Tim's Treasure. Apparently she raced four times, placed 2nd once, was injured (I was told) and that was the end of her racing career. I am happy to say I still have my beloved Treasure. She is now 35 and I am 53. She has been a wonderful horse. She recently suffered a pretty bad cut to a back leg, which we are now doctoring, but other than that she is in excellent health. She always greets me with a nicker when I go out to her pen to see her, whether I have her oat pan in hand or not. She has been a part of my life for so long I can't imagine life without her.
I pray she will still be with me for many years to come, maybe even to 53!
